Catalytic Converters

Disgusted by black, noxious fumes coming out of your vehicle? That smoke is fouling the air you breathe, and by the way, poisoning not only yourself but also your loved ones. And it could also mean frequent emissions tests, as mandated by various state laws and the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

You can solve that problem by installing catalytic converters into your vehicle. A catalytic converter (also known as catcon or cat) is a device that turns harmful exhaust gases like nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and unburned fuel into basic molecules like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and water. "Cats" reduce the toxicity of these emissions from your internal combustion engine. This way, these gases can no longer cause damage in the environment, thus making you safer and healthier.


Motor engines try to regulate the air:fuel ratio to 1:14.7. Meaning, for every pound of fuel to be burned, the engine needs 14.7 pounds of air to do the job. But in reality, when driving the air-fuel ratio in your engine varies from lean (an air-to-fuel ratio higher than 14.7), and other times the mixture can be rich (an air-to-fuel ratio lower than 14.7).


Because of these non-ideal conditions, the burnt fuel can actually produce other kinds of emissions like:


* Carbon monoxide - a poisonous gas that is colorless and odorless
* Hydrocarbons or volatile organic compounds - produced mostly from unburned fuel that evaporates

Sunlight breaks these down to form oxidants, which react with oxides of nitrogen to cause ground level ozone (O3), a major component of smog.
* Nitrogen oxides - contributes to smog and acid rain, and also causes irritation to human mucus membranes.


The catalytic converter works by:


1.Reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen.
2.Oxidation of (non greenhouse gas, but toxic) carbon monoxide to less harmful (greenhouse gas) carbon dioxide.
3.Oxidation of unburnt carcinogenic hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water.


Several components make up the standard catalytic converter. These are:

1.The core or substrate. The core is made up of a ceramic honeycomb, which provides support to the catalyst.
2.The washcoat. This is a mixture of silicon and aluminum. This forms with the core, a rough, irregular surface which has a large surface area. The large surface area gives more places for the catalyst to bind. The catalyst is first suspended to the washcoat before being applied to the core.
3.The catalyst. Tis is usually a precious metal, either platinum, palladium or rhodium. Platinum is most widely used but is the most expensive. Either palladium or rhodium is substituted for it. Platinum and rhodium are used as reduction catalysts, while palladium and platinum are oxidation catalysts.


One downside of having catalytic converters is that it becomes ineffective in the presence of lead, which leads to catalyst poisoning. Catalyst poisoning occurs when a substance in the engine exhaust coats the surface of the catalyst, preventing further exhaust access to the catalytic materials. To avoid it, vehicles with catalytic converters are run using unleaded fuel.


Catalytic converters help protect lessen the emissions brought about by the burning of fossil fuels. Having one installed is doing your share in protecting our environment. In the end, you are also protecting yourself and your loved ones.

The 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo

The 2008 Gallardo is more traditional then the past models that they have released. It is built with the traditional doors and cockpit. It is available in three different types; the Spyder convertible, standard coupe, and the lightweight performance edition Superleggera.

The Superleggera has a more aggressive suspension tuning and weight reduction that is close to 150 pounds. This makes it much less livable then the other two designs. But on the positive side this model increases the performance and handling for the Gallardo. The Sypder has an added 250 pounds of weight made up of structural reinforcement.

The Sant'Agata factory has already started production on the successor for the coupe to improve upon the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. They Spyder will not be changed and the Superleggera will be sold for this one year only. When it comes to the coupe we think it might be best to wait till 2009 and focus on getting your hands on the Leggera model.

All About Flags Used In Formula One Racing

In times past the race marshals used flags to send messages to the drivers. The marshals are positioned around the track each having ten different flags. However today the flags serve an information source for the spectators. Modern Formula One racing speeds make it difficult for drivers to be aware of the flags and react in a timely manner. Technological innovations now allow each Formula One racing cockpit to be equipped with a GPS marshalling system that displays the flag color when the driver is passing the relevant track location.
Formula One racing flags follow a pattern. Many of the flags are common to most auto racing events and familiar to the general public. Others are specific to Formula One racing.

The black and white checkered flag is perhaps the best known of all racing flags. The checkered flag indicates the finish of a session or race. During qualifying and practice sessions the flag is waved when the allotted time has elapsed. At the end of a Formula One racing event the checkered flag is waved first at the winner and then at all following cars so that they understand that the race has been completed.

The red flag is also used to indicate the end of a Formula One racing session. The waving of a red flag indicates that the session has ended early, generally as a result of poor track conditions or because of an accident.

The yellow and red striped flag informs drivers of adverse track conditions, such as oil or water on the track. It also may indicate debris on the track.

Marshals may wave either one or two solid yellow flags in Formula One racing. A single yellow flag warns drivers to slow down. Overtaking is not permitted. The yellow flag indicates a problem ahead, often a stranded car. Two yellow flags are waved at once to indicate an even greater danger ahead and that vehicles may be required to stop. A single yellow flag along with the SC sign indicates to drivers that the safety car will be entering the track.

When a slow moving vehicle has entered the track in Formula One racing the marshals wave a white flag, indicating that a reduction in speed is necessary.

The green flag is waved as a message that the track has been cleared and the race may resume full speed.

Honda Civic Type R EK9

In 1997, Civic also received the Type R treatment. Based on the 6th generation Civic's EK9 3-door hatchback body, it was commonly referred to EK9 Type R. Its B16B 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC engine got aggressive tuning including higher compression ratio, lightweight forged pistons, hand polished intake ports and more aggressive VTEC setting. This raised its red line to an astonishing 9000 rpm, maximum power from 170 hp to 185 hp at 8200 rpm. That was some 116 horsepower per liter ! At the time it was the world's most efficient naturally aspirated engine. On the downside, the small engine capacity limited its max torque to 118 lb-ft and it was delivered in a peaky manner. To compensate for the lack of low down torque, Honda fitted a close-ratio gearbox and ordered its chassis to undergo a strict diet. The result was the deletion of air conditioning, power steering, sound deadening and ABS. Besides, the regular seats were replaced by lightweight Recaro buckets, accompanied with serious-looking Momo steering wheel and titanium gear knob. As a result, the Civic Type R weighed only 1040 kilograms. Use its high-revving power smartly, it could accelerate from 0-60 mph in six point something seconds and flat out at near 140 mph.
The chassis of Type R was reinforced by using seam welding and suspension tower brace front and rear. Of course, the double-wishbone suspensions were stiffened a lot to enable flat cornering, while Bridgestone Potenza RE010 tyres provided extra grip. A helical LSD (limited slip differential) was added between the front wheels to ensure no wheelspin during hard cornering. The first generation Civic Type R was a hardcore driver's car, more so than any hot hatches at the time I could think of.

McLaren MP4-23 2008 Formula 1

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes presented the MP4-23, the team̢۪s 2008 Formula 1 car, at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. The first design meeting for the MP4-23 took place back in November 2006 with early layout work starting in March 2007. Lewis Hamilton, Pedro de la Rosa and Gary Paffett had their provisional seat fittings for the MP4-23 back in September 2007. With the fuel crisis still raging and the cost of gasoline going up on a nearly weekly basis, people are on the lookout for any way to achieve gas mileage improvements on their vehicles. There seems to be a resurgence of quite a few of the old gas mileage secrets popping up. Most of these so called gas mileage secrets seem to concern driving techniques or fuel additives as ways to save on gas.
These are all well and good and most of them seem to make sense, but what if you could save on gas right at the start when you are filling up your tank? One of the oldest tips for saving on gas is to fill up your fuel tank in the morning. The actual science of this is true and experts have claimed that warm gas has in the past cost people more at the pumps than they would have paid for cooler gas. While the oil industry experts say that this is no longer true due to the way that gas is stored in underground fibreglass tanks, how come oil companies outside of the United States are giving drivers a price break on gas in hotter weather?

That’s right gas stations in Canada get a price break from the oil companies in hot weather, these discounts are then passed onto the motorist by using pumps that monitor the temperature of the gas. They actually deliver more gas, a (â€Å“Bigger Gallon”) when the gas is hot. This practice is known as â€Å“temperature compensation.”

While the amount of compensation received by an individual driver may not be great, (around about 9 cents on a gallon) it does soon add up, and this small saving helps a little with the ever increasing cost of gas at the pumps. Take that 9 cents per gallon discount over a period of 12 months and you will realize what gas mileage improvements you could be making if this system was available in the United States.

But alas it seems that this system is not going to be available to us, even though groups like the Foundation for Taxpayers and Consumer Rights and web-sites like Turn Down Hot Fuel have been calling for compensation for American drivers. In fact gas company executives insist that this system would not work here because if retailers sold larger gallons then they would charge more for it.

So it seems that if you are one of the many drivers looking for gas mileage secrets or any little way at all to get gas mileage improvements from their vehicles, then you will have to look further than trying to get savings at the pumps through â€Å“temperature compensation.” Perhaps we should after all be filling up out gas tanks in the morning when the gas is cooler.

Biofuels and What They Are

You have heard the term biofuel but aren’t sure what it means. Biofuel is any fuel that is derived from biomass-recently living organisms or their metabolic by-products, such as manure from cows. It is considered ‘green’ because it comes from a renewable energy source, unlike other natural resources such as petroleum, coal and nuclear fuels.
Agricultural products specifically grown for use as biofuels include corn and soybeans (primarily in the United States) as well as flaxseed and rapeseed (primarily in Europe).

Waste from industry, agriculture, forestry and households can also be used to produce bioenergy and include straw, lumber, manure, sewage, garbage and food leftovers.

The production of biofuels to replace oil and natural gas is in active development, focusing on the use of cheap organic matter (usually cellulose, agricultural and sewage waste) in the efficient production of liquid and gas biofuels that yield high net energy gain.

There are various current issues with biofuel production and use, which are presently being discussed in the popular media and scientific journals. These include: the "food vs fuel" debate, carbon emissions levels, sustainable biofuel production, deforestation and soil erosion, impact on water resources, human rights issues, poverty reduction potential, biofuel prices, energy balance and efficiency, and centralised versus decentralised production models.

What material can be used to make biofuels? Conventional ethanol is made from sugar cane, corn, and sweet sorghum. Soybean and rapeseed oil are often used to make biodiesel, but coconut, palm, canola and jatropha nut oil are also being used throughout the world.

Trees, grass, agricultural residue, and municipal solid waste can also be converted into biofuels. Cellulose makes up the majority of a plant̢۪s structure and can be broken down into sugars, which can then be fermented and made into ethanol. Recent research is making this process less expensive and more energy efficient.

As the world̢۪s top producer, Brazil uses sugar cane to make ethanol. Many other developing countries, such as those of southern Africa, produce large amounts of sugar and also have potential to become ethanol producers. The Midwestern United States relies on corn to produce nearly one-quarter of the globe̢۪s ethanol, and China is quickly emerging as the third largest ethanol supplier.

Other countries with limited fossil fuel resources are examining the prospect of producing domestic fuel supplies. Thailand has an aggressive policy to make use of tapioca and sugar cane for ethanol production. In response to the recent passage of the EU Biofuels Directive, member countries are ramping up biodiesel production. The Philippines recently mandated incorporation of coconut oil biodiesel into diesel fuel, the first time coconut oil has been used as a motor fuel.

Cars, trucks, and farm machinery can all run on low-volume biofuel blends without any alteration. Current car warranties cover operation with ethanol-blended gas of up to ten percent. Biodiesel blends of 20% show similar operation in conventional diesel engines as regular diesel fuel.

Which Bio-fuel is Better? Algae vs. Ethanol

With oil prices skyrocketing, food costs peaking, and the economy in a recession, consumers are looking for a way to relieve the strain on their thinning pocketbooks. One of the ways to ease this stress is to look towards a cheaper, more efficient form of fuel. Here's where the exciting new bio-fuels industry comes into play. Currently, the most widely known alternative fuel source comes corn in the form of ethanol. But, is this fuel the best route to take? What about the increasing interest in algae as the base for an alternative fuel source? This article compares and contrasts the more conventional bio-fuel ethanol with bio-fuel produced from algae.
At first glance, ethanol seems like a great way to wean ourselves off of expensive foreign oil dependence. Lobbyists market ethanol as a clean, green, renewable, domestically produced fuel. But, are there hidden dangers lurking in these sprawling corn fields? According to Nobel Laureate Paul Cortzen's recent findings, bio-ethanol and bio-diesel (made from rapeseed) release more nitrous oxide (N2O) into the atmosphere than our current fossil fuels, whereas the algae based bio-fuel actually consumes available atmospheric CO2 and N2O when processed.

Also, ethanol, the seemingly miraculous alternative fuel, is predicted to reach a stockpile of 30 billion gallons by 2016, depleting half the U.S. supply of corn. This consumption has many consequences: With the supplies of corn, wheat, and other grains being consumed at such a high rate, there will be significantly less food for our domestic livestock; consequently, meat production will decrease, meat prices will increase at the supermarket, and less meat and grain will be exported to other countries.

As for the eco-footprint of ethanol, there is concern over its supposed environmentally friendly production methods. With increased corn and grain production more land is needed, as well as more fertilizer. This increase of fertilization could result in potentially harmful carcinogenic runoff into our water supply. Algae, on the other hand, has a small eco-footprint and is a low-cost, high-yield alternative.

First, producing algae as the foundation for bio-fuel is remarkably simple--anyone can do it if they put in the time and research.

All you need to do is build a temperature controlled "photo bioreactor" (any glass or plastic tank will work), use the right strain of algae, and allow photosynthesis to do the rest. Granted, not everyone will want to put in the time and effort, but the point is that if they wanted to make their own fuel, they could. For a company with the time and startup cost to go into business as a producer of algae based bio-fuel, it is estimated that one acre can produce up to 5,000 gallons of fuel a year!

This ease and profitability of production, almost nonexistent eco-footprint, and independence from corporate lobbyists makes algae a much more promising and exciting new alternative fuel source than ethanol.

RV loans allow people who are unable to pay the purchase price for a recreational vehicle the ability to actually possess one for a period of time, all the while, adhering to a payment schedule agreed upon with the lender. Even getting a reduction in the interest rate by a few percentage points can make a major difference in the long run. 2% of 100,000 is 2000; say the loan is over 10 years. How to Check a Used Car before You Buy it

A used car always has faults that reduce the comfort of using the car or that must be repaired before using it comfortably and safely. Here are some tips for checking a used car before any purchase.


BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ASSESSING A CAR BEFORE YOU BUY

The basic principles of assessing a used car before you buy it are:


- Look at everything.
- Test everything.
- Check the car's history.
- Write down what you find.


Before you begin checking the car, make sure you have ready something to note down your findings upon.


If you only remember these four depicted principles, you will probably make a good assessment even without any more detailed plan. However, in the following a plan for the assessment is presented. It is not always possible to do it exactly as described, but try to follow the procedures as well as you can.



LOOK IT ALL OVER

Before starting the car, you should watch the whole car externally and internally in a systematic manner:

Some dirt is normal, but extreme and unusual dirt should give you something to think about. Do you see any cracks or any asymmetry? Are there any signs of repair work done? Such symptoms indicate that the car has been through an accident.
- Try the suspension by bouncing each of the corners of the car. They should bounce only one or two times in every corner, and without any cracking noise.
- Look to see if the car has spare wheels, standard tools for repair and wheel shift, and both summer and winter wheels present.
- Then turn the key so that the electric systems are activated.
- Look at everything in the cabin. Look under the carpets. Sit down in all seats. Try all regulatory possibilities of the seats.
- Try all electric windows, electric mirrors and other commodities that are electrically operated.
- Try out all lights, including the signal lights and the serene. If some of them do not work, set in a new bulb, to see if this is the only problem.
- Try the radio, car computer, music equipment and any GPS navigation unit.



START THE MOTOR AND TEST

After having seen the car all over, it is time to start the motor. The motor should ideally be started when it is cold. A motor started easily when it is warm, does not necessarily start easily when cold.
- Start the motor. Does the motor start easily or not? Listen for sound of uneven motor work, sounds of vibrations or sounds of friction. Do you feel any vibrations outside the normal?
- When starting the motor, kick the brake pedal. It should easily go down and kick in the brakes when the motor is started. If not, the brake servo can be broken.
- Listen for unusual or high sounds from the exhaust system indicating breakage.
- Look at the dashboard panel. Do all indicators work? Does any indicator signal any problem?
- Try the steering by turning the steering wheels. How much do you have to rotate it before the wheels turn? It should not be more than around 2 cm or 0.8 inch.
- Try the window washers and the window wipers, and any light wiper and washers.
- Kick in the clutch, and try all the gears if it is manually geared.
- Try out the cabin heater or air conditioning.



TEST DRIVE

Then there is the time for a test drive. When you are test-driving the car, you should try out the following:
- Set the gearbox in reverse, and back out of the parking place. Does the gas and the clutch work smoothly when backing? Does the car get smoothly into motion?
